So you want to DJ? Advice from DJ Richkid Rich, and what he looks for in a Yoga Electronica DJ

By DJ Richkid Rich (Rich Cotter)
Someone asked: "Heard the DJ scene gained around 200+ new DJ talent. Where we at with that?" Here's my answer.
We're in a scene, and DJing is two things: a low barrier of entry, and a networking business. Handshakes. You get booked on the phone or in person.
Build your network. Get your marketing right. Have your vision, and be skilled far beyond the press-play DJs and bar DJs.
This is advice I wish I had when I started out. The real money is in throwing your own events and co-creating with other like-minded people. Don't come in with an ego that has to control everything. Every good event in this scene has a team behind it.
I hired a life coach, David Prorok, an amazing coach, influencer and web designer. Now I'm booking DJs and teaching yoga to electronic dance music.
The DJs I'm looking for
- 1No alcohol.
- 2No hard drugs.
- 3A true ambient open and close. You can open and close with an ambient track or two, so dancers naturally come down to the floor in savasana (relaxation pose).
- 4You've taken a yoga class. So you can think about track selection and shape your set like a wave: building to a peak, then naturally bringing people back down to the floor after 75 minutes of an 85-minute set.
- 5You've felt the room first. Check out an ecstatic dance, and come to a Yoga Electronica event to meet me. Experience the ceremony, the no-alcohol bar, and the ask-consent-before-dancing-or-touch culture, so you see how dancers move together or on their own.
Come find out
DJs and dancers who feel the desire and curiosity: apply to DJ, join the email list, come practice yoga to a DJ set, dance and become embodied. The next one is Sunday, October 11. At 3:00, Breena Shusterman leads her yoga dance session, DJ'd live by DJ Richkid Rich himself. Then at 3:50, DJ Carmen Fiorentino, aka DJ Twitchin Skratch (I am Me), plays the main dance set.
