DJ Redlox, also known as Thunder Gong and, on the yoga mat, as Siri Adi Singh, has spent 30 years behind the turntables. He started at 13 on the mic at WDGC 88.3 FM, then brought beat-matching and key-mixing to Chicago's reggae and dancehall scene and helped build the city's Bollywood, Bhangra and world-music nights.
He has shared stages with The Roots, Talib Kweli, Sean Paul, The Wailers, Kymani and Julian Marley, Destiny's Child and Twista, played the Official NBA All-Star after-party and the Waldorf Astoria, and won a Colorado Broadcasters Association award for his radio mixing. Today he hosts on Rukus Avenue Radio.
Since 1995 he has also taught Kundalini yoga and meditation, and was profiled in Yoga Journal. He teaches the way he DJs: "I teach yoga like I DJ." He reads the room and plays what the moment needs, from his own library, remixes and recordings he made with Jamaican artists.
His classes end in savasana and a guided deep relaxation, then a few minutes of silence while he steps behind the decks. From there he gets on the mic, gently wakes the room and opens the ecstatic dance, so class and dance become one continuous arc.
